HISTORY
As explained on the town’s official website, Star was incorporated in 1897 and was previously called “Hunsucker’s Store” after the original landowner’s trading post. During the 1860s-70s, gold mining dominated the area. Later, Star became a major shipping point for lumber, turpentine and bricks by railroad. This would lead to the opening of The Star Hotel Bed and Breakfast in 1896 — a building that still stands today.
Star flourished well into the next century through expansion in rail and various other industries, before economic hardships halted much of that growth. In 2013, downtown Star earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
AMENITIES
Star, NC is conveniently located near the geographic center of the state providing access to mountains, beaches and everything in between. A diverse industrial base includes Montgomery County Schools, MPG, Jordan Lumber & Supply, Inc., Southern Correctional Center, Realistic Furniture, Inc., and McRae Industries among the major employers. Montgomery County Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges awarding certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital has served the healthcare needs of the surrounding area since 1950. Emergency, outpatient and acute care services are among the many services provided by the hospital.
RECREATION
The Uwharrie National Forest is a 50,000-acre scenic wonderland full of wildlife and trails for all kinds of recreational activities. The North Carolina Zoo is the world’s largest natural habitat zoo and home to more than 1,800 animals. Montgomery County has 156 bodies of water totaling over 230 miles of shoreline and more than 10,000 acres.
Lake Tillery is a reservoir between Badin Lake and Blewett Falls Lake featuring nearly 120 miles of shoreline for endless adventure as well as leisure.
Town Creek Indian Mound is a state historic site containing interpretive exhibits and tours, while STARworks Center for Creative Enterprise promotes development through artistic educational programs and ventures.
Annual festivals and events in Montgomery County include the Indian Heritage Festival, Troy Fest, Mount Gilead Christmas Parade and Star Christmas Parade.

Star, NC receives 47 inches of rainfall on average annually compared to approximately 216 days of sunshine each year. Winters tend to be mild, while summers are typically very warm. Spring and fall offer distinct and refreshing transitions. The elevation is around 600 feet.
